ADI FY16 Summer Intern Program sets diverse participation record

The Summer Student Intern Program led by the Alliance for Diversity and Inclusion (ADI), for fiscal year 2016, had the highest diverse participation since the program’s inception in 2008. Of the 19 interns hired, the participants were 47 percent female and 63 percent diverse. Also, 10 percent of the interns returned to their positions during the academic year. Part of the success of the year’s hiring process was an early start; recruiting began in December 2015 with an application deadline of mid-February. The program started up on June 2, 2016.

As in the last few years, the interns participated in a series of events. Overall, there were two more events than in previous years. Executive Vice President and CFO Joanne DeStefano and Vice President and Chief Information Officer Dave Lifka greeted students at an opening breakfast. During weekly luncheons, students heard from Cornell’s senior leaders, who presented on various topics from internal audit to fundraising to research and outreach. These sessions marked the first time the program has offered one-on-one interaction with executive leaders. The presentations gave students a wide view of how Cornell’s financial functions affect its operations.

In addition to these luncheons, students enjoyed a social outing at Taughannock Falls State Park.

At the closing event, students presented their discoveries and project outcomes to each other, their supervisors, and members of ADI’s senior leadership. Some of the students’ presentations also covered recommendations for various improvements to the departments in which they worked. Supervisors at the closing luncheon said that the presentations were useful and that many of the suggestions students presented were viable. Executive summaries of the students’ work were provided to participating executive leaders to enable them to provide informed references for the students’ future endeavors.

After the closing luncheon, students were photographed as a group with senior leaders and with their supervisors, so that the students had keepsakes of their experiences. Many of these photographs are available on the ADI Flickr account.
