20 Diverse student summer intern positions open – apply by February 21

Approximately 20 positions are now available for the diverse student summer internship program, sponsored by the Alliance for Diversity and Inclusion at Cornell. The application deadline is February 21, 2016. Internships begin in June and will run 6 to 8 weeks through mid-August, at 30 to 39 hours per week, depending on availability.

About the Program

The summer intern program is an important part of fostering a culture of global diversity and inclusion at Cornell. Members of underrepresented groups (women, minorities, and students with disabilities) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Although the intern positions are in different departments, regular opportunities are provided for interns to gather and interact. Interning students can gain skills in a hands-on learning environment that can be carried over to the workplace or graduate school. Selected interns are expected to contribute positively to the Cornell community, conduct themselves in a professional manner, and must participate fully during normal office hours. Weekly lunchtime meetings, where lunch is provided, will include presentations from staff members. Interns are expected to participate in these events and exhibit interest in learning about Cornell departments and staff roles, as well as provide perspectives on the subjects presented.

At the end of the summer, interns will deliver presentations that highlight what they’ve learned from the experience, how they will apply the experience for future positions and endeavors, and give feedback on how the organization can improve.

2016 Positions

  • Division of Financial Affairs:
    • University Controller (1 Intern) – Financial projects, data analysis, etc.
    • Financial Systems Administration and Information Delivery (1 Intern) – Financial reporting user requirements documentation, data analysis, etc.
    • Procurement Services (3 Interns) – Business process improvements, spend analysis, etc.
    • Sponsored Financial Services (1-2 Interns) – Asset assignment, system and process analysis, etc.
    • Tax and Financial Initiatives (1 Intern) – Data analysis, budget reviews, process streamlining, etc.
    • University and Small Academic Finance Service Center (1 Intern) – Process streamlining, procedure analysis, etc.
  • University Audit Office (2 Interns) – Audit planning and field work, data analysis, etc.
  • The Cornell Store (2 Interns) – Business process reviews, sales analysis, marketing plans, etc.
  • Cornell Information Technologies:
    • Academic Technologies (2 Interns) – Support learning technologies, communication projects, technical writing, etc.
    • Custom Development (2 Interns) – Process improvements, quality assurance testing, web content entry, etc.
    • Business Intelligence (1 Intern) – Data modeling, reporting, database tuning and development, etc.
    • IT Security (1 Intern) – Vulnerability assessments, digital forensics, data analysis, etc.
    • IT Support (1 Intern) – Process analysis, databases, data analytics, communications, etc.
    • IT Communications (1 Intern) – Communication projects, social media, event planning, etc.

To apply for any of these positions by February 21, 2016, log in to Cornell Handshake on the Cornell Career Services website. You can search for positions by keyword. Housing is not available for these internships; students will need to make their own arrangements.

Required Qualifications

To be a successful candidate, you should be a strong analytical thinker, a problem solver, and a multi-tasker, with well-developed communication skills. You must be able to interact with all levels of staff, be attentive to detail, and be able to work with little supervision and execute directions to required standards. You must also possess advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Access). Coursework or work experience in the applicable area is a plus.
