eCornell Intern Ava Zhang Explores Product Management in Higher Education
Cornell University Information Science major Ava Zhang spent the summer of 2024 as a product management intern with eCornell, a leader in Ivy League online education. Her role involved analyzing various indexes of the eCornell course certificate dataset and learning to use visualization tools like Tableau.
Zhang’s previous data analytics experience allowed her to quickly adapt to the team and contribute to data-driven decisions by applying data science thinking and statistical analysis skills acquired in her Cornell courses. “Despite individual detail-oriented tasks, the team works toward common goals and fosters innovation,” she said. “Processes like double- and triple-checking ensure precision and efficiency, and I learned how continuous efforts to template these processes help improve cross-team efficiency.”
Working with experienced professionals helped her see how organized data informs strategic decisions and drives organizational change, and her colleagues’ kindness and inclusivity created a lasting impression.
“They made me feel valued, even as an intern, and were always willing to offer guidance, both professionally and personally,” she said. “The experience was an eye-opening opportunity to understand the inner workings of higher education, where the work culture is passion-driven and collaborative in contrast to more competitive environments. I’m now more inclined to explore career opportunities in higher education because I recognize its potential for making meaningful contributions and finding personal fulfillment.”
Her internship was part of Cornell’s Alliance for Diversity and Inclusion (ADI) Student Intern Program. The ADI intern program provides opportunities for students to explore careers in higher education teams like Payroll, IT, Retail, and Public Safety, and offers a supportive, inclusive work environment for both in-person and remote interns.
This environment reshaped Zhang’s expectations of future employers. “I realized the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive office culture, which greatly enhances creativity and collaboration, especially in product management,” she said.
For future ADI candidates, Zhang advised thoroughly researching the team’s mission before applying. “Showing passion, and understanding the organization’s goals will set you apart. Be confident, open to new opportunities, and ready to embrace the unexpected,” said Zhang.
“The summer experience is highly enriching, filled with learning opportunities and the chance to meet incredible people. For me, it was a life-changing experience, and I believe future interns will also find it both fulfilling and memorable.”
