ADI year in review, and looking ahead!

Fiscal Year 2016 (FY16), which concluded in June, was an exciting one for Alliance for Diversity and Inclusion (ADI) initiatives, and the current year is already shaping up to go to a higher level.

The FY16 Summer Intern Program hired twenty interns, as the most diverse group so far, with 47 percent female and an overall 63 percent diversity. What’s more, ten percent of the interns returned as staff members after the end of this summer’s program.

For the Supplier Diversity Initiative, three new targeted suppliers were added in FY16, two (LPS and Adminders) achieving NYS state certification. Additionally, a key supplier (Computing Center) became a women-owned business and will be added to the “targeted” program next year. More than $1 million was spent with diverse suppliers, and the number of suppliers in the supplier database used by campus units increased to more than 2,500, including 228 New York State-certified diverse suppliers. Twelve units have identified spending with diverse suppliers as a specific goal. In particular, the Johnson School had a total of five diverse supplier relationships, more than ever, and made use of a streamlined process.

Diversity training in FY16 added new options for staff members to broaden and deepen their awareness of a variety of related subjects, selected from a “menu” of choices, which included in-person facilitated sessions, readings, and videos. Nearly 100% participation was achieved through the participating units, and even some individuals from groups outside ADI joined in! Feedback on this year’s program was overwhelmingly positive, with nine in ten respondents reporting that they enjoyed the program.

There were also significant changes for communication efforts, some reflecting the dramatic growth of the initiative. In FY16, the group was renamed the “Alliance for Diversity and Inclusion.” This change informed updates to the website ( and all other communication channels. The website received, on average, more than two hundred users per month, greater than 40% of the population of ADI units, in addition to the recipients of the newsletter who find the email summary updates to be sufficient and, therefore, do not choose to click through full articles on the site.

In FY17, ADI units can look forward to seeing the following growth and changes:

ADI is adding more groups! We would like to welcome Budget and Planning, the Cornell Police, and Environmental Health and Safety.

The Summer Intern Program will implement enhancements based on feedback received from participating individuals and groups, and will extend criteria to include students with disabilities. The Student Disability Center has agreed to help with recruiting, and by ensuring that any and all necessary accommodations are provided.

The Supplier Diversity Initiative will add “targeted” suppliers and attempt to find suppliers with its newest designation: LBGTQ. The program will also investigate any federal and state plans to implement any new categories, including veteran-owned businesses.

A new initiative, “Diversity of Thought,” will be launched this year. The objective is to encourage representation through a combination of actions, such as adding constituents who have not been included in the past, increasing the range of varying grade levels on committees, or otherwise diversifying. Another aspect of this initiative is to incorporate individual participation in Diversity Training as part of this year’s Performance Dialogue, as well as at least one staff meeting per year in each area devoted to a conversation about diversity.

Finally, Diversity Training will broaden its choices of videos, articles, and facilitated sessions offered, to be done in the same manner as last year. The communications effort will continue with an available website, newsletters and a revised poster which outlines our 2016-2017 initiatives.
